History

Covenant Church of Mobile was founded by Rev. Charles Simpson in 1973 as a fellowship of Christian believers who were meeting in home groups across the Gulf Coast. Other pastors who formed the founding presbytery included John Duke, Jr., Terry Parker, and Glen Roachelle. The new church quickly grew and became one of the pioneering independent charismatic congregations in the Southeastern United States.

At the time of its founding, the church was unique in many ways, including its strong emphasis on small home groups and personal pastoral care; it was also rooted in strong conservative Reformed Christian theology, but with a vibrant charismatic expression in worship and in the exercising of the gifts and ministries of the Holy Spirit.

“Covenant” became the focus of the church’s theology because:

• God Himself is a covenant-making, covenant-keeping God.
• The Bible is a series of covenants.
• The constitution for Christian and church life is the New Covenant in Christ’s blood.
• “Covenant” describes the quality of love God gives to us and that we are to give to one another.

Covenant love is self-sacrificing and enduring for the preservation of the common good. It is the quality that holds all things together. This love is the motive for Christ’s death on the Cross so that we might be saved and reconciled to God, for the preservation of family life, and for the establishment and preservation of the Church. It was the covenant love of Jesus that called us together as a spiritual family and has sustained us over the years.

In 1982, Covenant Church purchased the property at the corner of Hitt and Cody Roads where our present facilities now stand. Part of our property was sold to Integrity Media in 1994, and we constructed a new worship and childcare facility at that time. Throughout our existence as a church, we have focused on classic orthodox Christian theology, worship, pastoral care, the kingdom of God, family life, and spiritual power. We are actively engaged in reaching out with the Gospel in our city and in many nations through numerous ministries, many of which were birthed among our congregation.

Today, Rev. Stephen Simpson heads up a pastoral team that includes pastors Billy Duke, Oliver Heath, Guy Binegar, Grant Simpson, Gerald Franklin, Keith Currie, Alan Allred, Dennis Braswell, Jeff Herndon, and Felipe Pinochet. Covenant Church of Mobile is not merely an organization, but it is a vibrant organic spiritual community with a rich heritage and a hopeful future.
